After it was announced that Jenson Button will take a year out of Formula One racing, McLaren Honda have partnered Fernando Alonso with Belgian driver Stoffel Vandoorne for the 2017 series of races.
The British driver hasn’t ruled out making a comeback in 2018 and will continue to be involved as a test driver and ambassador for McLaren.
“I needed a break, to be able to spend more time with my family,” Button told a packed press conference.
“I can live my life as I want, something that I could never do before now.”
McClaren chief Ron Dennis, Alonso and Vandoorne were also present and the Spaniard was complimentary when asked about his departing colleague.
“He’s the best teammate I’ve ever had.”
Dennis himself praised Button and noted, clearly, that the 36-year-old has stopped short of a goodbye to F1.
“He’s a great guy and a very complete driver inside and outside of the car.
“This new situation is a challenge for him because this world is addictive.”
