Elizaveta Kulichkova and Kristyna Pliskova suffered early exits in the Dalian Women’s Tennis Open on Tuesday.
The respective fourth and sixth seeds were the most notable casualties on day one of the WTA 125k series event in China, at which a number of less-heralded names are looking to shine as the game’s leading stars continue to seek US Open glory.
Kulichkova went down 6-3 6-4 to Liu Fangzhou, the world number 164, while Pliskova also bowed out at the hands of a Chinese player, losing 6-2 6-4 to Lu Jia-Jing.
Second seed Bojana Jovanovski survived a scare to beat Xu Shilin 6-4 2-6 6-1, while Nao Hibino prevailed against Liu Chang following a final-set tie-break.
Elsewhere, there were wins for Chang Kai-Chen, Luksika Kumkhum, Han Xinyun and Petra Martic.
