Uganda name crack squad to face Ghana in AFCON qualifier, key defender Iguma dropped

Uganda coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has named a strong squad to face Ghana in next week’s crucial 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier, dropping key defender Dennis Iguma for lack of playing time at club level.

“I have left out Iguma because he has not be active with his SC Victoria University in the League. He has not been active and yet there are other defenders who deserve to have a chance,” said Sredojevic.

Iguma who skippered Uganda at the 2014 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) has featured in all the team’s three games in the Afcon qualifiers. The Cranes will have a trial International build-up against Ethiopia on Sunday at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

The coach however told that he expects some professional players from Ethiopia, Iceland and even University of Pretoria striker, Geoffrey Massa to be available for the International friendly.

“This game against Ethiopia will help us test the players in a proper match situation as we prepare for two tough games against Ghana and Guinea,” added the Serbian born coach.

Among the new players invited for the friendly include El Merreikh’s goalkeeper Jamal Salim Magoola and Mike Sserumaga from Lweza FC. Making a return to the team are Farouk Miya (SC Vipers), and former skipper Hassan Wasswa Mawanda who skippered Uganda when they lifted the 2012 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.
