South African midfielder dies in car accident

Maritzburg United midfielder Mondli Cele has died after the car he was travelling in veered off into the Duzi river on Park Drive, Pietermaritzburg.

It is believed a second passenger, a female whose name has not yet been confirmed, also died.

The 27-year-old, who scored the opening goal in the Team of Choice’s 3-3 thriller at home to Orlando Pirates at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday night, made his Premier Soccer League debut in the 2014/15 season.

Those at the scene say Cele lost control of the car in the heavy rain that was lashing Pietermaritzburg las night.

Cele, who joined the club last season, had made eight appearances this season and scored two goals
