Olympic gold medallist Greg Rutherford has pulled out of next week’s World Indoor Athletics Championships, citing illness and slight injury as the reason.
The 29-year-old has been struggling with a chest infection and niggling hamstring problem in recent days, and needs more time to fully recover.
With the Olympics coming up in the summer, the Brit does not want to take any risks with his build-up.
Rutherford also missed the Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix and British Indoor Championships last month.
“Greg is really disappointed not to be able to compete in Portland, but his body reacted harder than expected to this week’s training,” British Athletics performance director Neil Black said.
“Defending the Olympic title is obviously Greg’s main focus for 2016, so he has sensibly decided not to take any risks and to end his indoor season here.
“This will allow him the opportunity to concentrate on being in the best shape possible going into the outdoor season and ultimately Rio.”
