Cristiano Ronaldo has aimed a veiled swipe at former boss Rafael Benitez, revealing he and his team-mates feel “a better understanding” with new manager Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid.
The Portuguese striker struck twice for his club in a one-sided 5-1 victory over Sporting Gijon on Sunday, goals that opened his account under Zizou.
And, speaking after the match, Ronaldo admitted that the former Madrid idol’s arrival was a breath of fresh air around the Santiago Bernabeu.
“There has been a change of mood in Real Madrid, a push in the right direction,” he told reporters.
“We have a better understanding with Zidane, that is football.
“I see a change for the better with Zidane’s arrival, but Zidane and Benitez both wanted the best for the club. I feel a better understanding with Zizou, don’t ask me why.”
Ronaldo went as far to compare the rookie coach with Carlo Ancelotti, who took Madrid to the coveted Decima Champions League title in 2013/4.
“I see shades of Carlo in Zidane,” he said.
“He is a very serious person while at work, and good fun outside of it.”
