Following Britain’s spectacular effort in 2012, Brazil had to go a long way to match the vibrant nature of the Olympic Games’ opening ceremony with the numbers behind it staggering.
The games are now officially open although a small minority of events including football already began in earnest earlier in the week.
Stars such as Michael Phelps and Andy Murray all took part in a ceremony that involved a monumental number of people and materials behind the scenes which included:
An estimated one thousand million television viewers
50,000 spectators in the Maracana
50,000 metres of canvas
35,000 people involved in security
26,000 kilometres of running with the Olympic torch
20,000 metres of cable
5,500 dresses and costumes
5,000 volunteers to participate in the ceremony
300 artistic producers
206 Olympic committees
180 makeup artists
55 athletes from the most represented events
12 schools of samba
