Following Britain’s spectacular effort in 2012, Brazil had to go a long way to match the vibrant nature of the Olympic Games’ opening ceremony with the numbers behind it staggering.

The games are now officially open although a small minority of events including football already began in earnest earlier in the week.

Stars such as Michael Phelps and Andy Murray all took part in a ceremony that involved a monumental number of people and materials behind the scenes which included:
