Two second half goals from Messi end Arsenal’s resistance and handed Barcelona a 2-0 win at the Emirates, which put them on a strong position to advance to the quarter finals. The Gunners know well that they have a mountain to climb when coming against a Barcelona side who are on a run of nine straight home wins in the UEFA Champions League.
Barcelona together with Real Madrid are unbeaten in this season’s Champions League. They have won their last nine matches at home and their last defeat at home was a 3-0 loss to Bayern Munich in May 2013. This is their only defeat at home in 36 Champions League matches, out of which 29 have been wins.
Arsenal haven’t reached the Champions League quarter finals since 2010 and were eliminated in the knock out round of 16.
They have lost three matches in the group stages of this season’s competitions and managed to qualify as second best team on the basis of a superior goal difference against Olympiakos.
