The veteran midfielder produced a sensational long-range strike to decide the Derby della Mole in the favour of the Serie A leaders, who remain three points clear of Roma
Giorgio Chiellini paid tribute to Andrea Pirlo for earning Juventus “three priceless points” with his “world-class finish” against Torino on Sunday night.
The reigning Serie A champions looked set to drop points at home to their city rivals, with Bruno Peres having cancelled out Arturo Vidal’s opener, before Bianconeri defender Stephan Lichtsteiner was dismissed late on.
However, Pirlo won the game for Juve with a sensational last-gasp strike from some 25 metres out, much to the delight of Chiellini.
“Winning an important match in the last minute is an incredible feeling,” the defender is quoted as saying by his club’s official website.
“Thinking back to the game, we performed better in some areas and worse in others but Pirlo’s world-class finish handed us three priceless points.
“Torino’s 3-5-2 formation is one that is difficult to contain and they gave a battling performance. They did well to pick out those players making darts inside.
“Bruno Peres’ outstanding goal upset our rhythm because it looked like we were on our way to getting a positive result after scoring early.
“But thank goodness Pirlo’s world class finish came along and we won! It’s a phenomenal victory.”
Juve’s dramatic derby win means they remain three points clear of Roma at the top of the table but Chiellini is anticipating a titanic title tussle with the Giallorossi.
“We have to take it game by game,” the Italy international reasoned. “We’ve only dropped points in Genoa and Reggio Emilia – and yet the Italian league is as competitive as ever.
“You have to hand it to Roma, who remain on our tails.
“But we’re striving to get even better, without settling for what we’ve got at the moment.
“We’re aware of our quality, but continue to keep our feet on the ground.”
Up next for Juve is a tricky-looking trip to the Artemio Franchi on Friday to take on Fiorentina.
