Oscar Pistorius to apply for bail on Tuesday

Oscar Pistorius will apply for bail on Tuesday after being convicted of murdering girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, South Africa’s Office of Chief Justice has confirmed.

Pistorius was handed a five-year jail term last October for the culpable homicide of Steenkamp, whom he killed by firing shots through a locked bathroom door on Valentine’s Day 2013.

The Paralympic gold medallist, who said he thought Steenkamp was an intruder, was released and put under house arrest this October, having served a fifth of his sentence.

However, last week South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal ruled his initial manslaughter conviction should be changed to murder, which carries a minimum jail sentence of 15 years.

A court statement read: “The hearing for the formal postponement of sentencing proceedings [bail] in the Oscar Pistorius matter will be at heard at the Gauteng Division of the High Court, Pretoria, on Tuesday 8 December 2015, in Court GD.

“Deputy Judge President of the Gauteng Division of the High Court, Judge Aubrey Ledwaba will be presiding.”
