Barcelona have confirmed that they will appeal the four match ban given to Gerard Pique following the red card he received in his side’s Supercopa de Espana second-leg against Athletico Bilbao on Monday.
Referee Velasco Carballo’s claimed in his post-match report that Pique shouted “I s*** on your w**** mother” at his assistant during the 1-1 draw at Camp Nou which saw Athletic Bilbao win 5-1 on aggregate to lift the trophy.
Pique apologised for his attitude towards the linesman, but insists he did not insult him and so the club have decided to appeal the suspension.
“Barcelona will appeal to the Appeals Committee against the four match ban handed to Gerard Pique for his red card in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup against Athletic on Monday,” a statement from the Blaugrana read.
“The Club has a period of 10 days to present their appeal.
“In the appeal, the player, just as he has repeated on various occasions, will point out that he did not address the referee’s assistant in the terms recorded in referee Velasco Carballo’s match report.”
