The Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, George Afriyie has told Sportscrusader.com that players of the senior National team did not receive any bonuses after the defeat to Senegal as is been speculated in sections of the Ghanaian media.
The Black Stars lost 1-2 to Senegal on Monday in the opening Group C game at the ongoing African Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea and there are reports that the players were paid even in the face of defeat but George Afriyie says such reports are not accurate.
“When did Ghana ever pay a losing bonus? Yes initially there was this flat rate of $5,000 per game but before we left Ghana, we came back to announce a new format and what the approach will be at the tournament. There is nothing like a losing bonus. Such things distract the team so let us not be fixated on it. This is not the time to be talking about winning or losing bonuses. Let us focus on the game on Friday,” George told Sportscrusader.com in Mongomo.
The Black Stars face a stern test in their attempt to qualify to the next stage of the tournament after losing the opening Group C game.
Ghana must now beat Algeria in the second Group game or face a possible exit from the tournament.
Algeria on the other hand have started their campaign brightly and comfortably beat South Africa 3-1 on the same day that Ghana lost to Senegal.
