Napoli build up to Real Madrid with record-breaking win

An incredible attacking performance saw Napoli hammer Bologna by a 7-1 scoreline, their biggest-ever Serie A away win, to remind Champions League opponents Real Madrid of just how tough their last-16 tie promises to be.

Marek Hamsik set the tone after four minutes and went on to seal a hat-trick although Dries Mertens wasn’t to be upstaged, grabbing his own trio of goals alongside a similarly early strike from Lorenzo Insigne.

And yet, the Partenopei were reduced to 10-men after two first-half bookings for Jose Callejon, although it wasn’t long before the hosts lost Adam Masina to a straight red card, which arrived in between Mattia Destro’s missed penalty and Vasilis Torosidis’ consolation strike.

While Napoli were left to revel in scoring seven for the first time in a single Serie A away game, breaking their previous best of five, 12th-placed Bologna are left to rue their ill discipline having endured their ninth dismissal, a tally unmatched across Europe’s top five leagues.

Jumping into second with the win before Roma play Fiorentina on Tuesday, Maurizio Sarri’s side go within three points of leaders Juventus, who have two games in hand.
