Jose Mourinho has given his biggest indication yet that Abdul Rahman Baba would play only a backup role atChelsea next season after praising Cesar Azpilicueta.
“We have the best left-back in England—Azpilicueta,” the coach began, speaking as the departure of Filipe Luis nears, as per the Express.
The Brazil international is on the brink of leaving Stamford Bridge, with Atletico Madrid close to finalising the defender’s return to the Spanish capital.
Filipe Luis left the Vicente Calderon last summer, arriving in the Premier League as a Liga BBVA and having recently featured in the Champions League.
However, he has endured a miserable campaign, making only nine EPL starts and wholly failing to dislodge 25-year-old Azpilicueta.
Mourinho appears unfazed about losing the Selecao star, and appears to have complete confidence in Azpilicueta—the best in his position in the Premier League, according to the Portuguese coach.
While the reigning English champions look set to bring Baba to west London as a replacement for Filipe Luis, Mourinho’s comments would appear to indicate that the Black Star ought to hold little hope of securing much in the way of playing time at Stamford Bridge next term.
The Augsburg defender is reportedly nearing a £15 million move to Chelsea, but amidst rumours that he is unsure about moving to the club only to be a backup, and considering the struggles of players such as international teammate Christian Atsu, it remains to be seen whether Baba will agree to a move.
Mourinho’s supreme praise for Azpilicueta ought to make the 21-year-old very wary about moving to Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea having recently become something of a graveyard for young talent.
