Fresh from signing a new contract to keep him at Real Madrid until 2020, Luka Modric has admitted that he always knew he would be a success at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
A hugely important part of the squad that won last season’s Champions League, the Croatian has become a firm favourite in the Spanish capital; delighting Los Blancos supporters with his high-energy brand of technical football.
And upon signing his new deal, Modric suggested that he was well aware when he signed for the club in 2012 that he’d be able to fulfil his obvious potential in Madrid.
“There came a time in my career where I had to move to improve and grow as a player,” he told reporters. “Upon arrival in Madrid it was clear that this was a team where I could show all my qualities. I hope to continue in the same vein.”
“It’s a very special day [signing a contract extension]. I am very happy and excited to renew with Real Madrid, the best club in the world.
“I want to thank the club and Florentino [Perez] for trusting in me. I promise I will do my best and work hard to meet the aims of the club. I hope to have many more successes in the future here.”
Currently nursing a knee injury aggravated in the 2-2 Champions League draw against Borussia Dortmund on September 27, the 31-year-old has stepped up his rehabilitation but is refusing to set a specific date for his long-awaited comeback.
“I feel good. Every day I am better. I’m working long and hard to get back as soon as possible to play,” he continued.
“I do not want to say when that will be. I’m taking things day-to-day and every day I feel much better. I hope to return to the pitch soon, but I cannot say when.”
