Marcos Baghdatis booked his place in the second round of the Rotterdam Open with a dramatic 6-1 5-7 7-6 (7-5) comeback win over David Goffin.
Baghdatis breezed into the lead on Tuesday, dropping just one game in the opening set, but was pegged back by the fourth-seeded Belgian.
Goffin stepped up his service game in the second set, winning 18 of a possible 21 points while saving two break points to level the match.
He looked sure to progress when he moved into a 5-2 lead in a tie-break in the final set, but Cypriot veteran Baghdatis – ranked 45 places below his opponent – rallied from behind to advance courtesy of a 41-stroke rally on match point.
Next up for Baghdatis is Martin Klizan, who overcame Tommy Robredo 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 6-3.
Fifth seed and Australian Open quarter-finalist Gael Monfils never looked in trouble as he made light work of Ernests Gulbis, securing a 6-4 6-4 victory in just over 72 minutes.
Julien Benneteau’s hopes of replicating his performance in 2013, when he reached the Rotterdam final, ended with a 6-4 6-4 loss to Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Kohlschreiber will meet qualifier Ivan Dodig in the next round.
Gilles Muller came from behind to secure a first tour-level win over Andreas Seppi, hitting 19 aces in a 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 triumph.
Muller’s triumph earned a showdown with second seed Marin Cilic.
Hyeon Chung battled back from a first-set loss to defeat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 5-7 6-4 6-4.
