Lionel Messi criticised by former Argentina coach

It has been a difficult week already for Lionel Messi and former Argentina coach Cesar Luis Menotti made an interesting point by suggesting the 29-year-old wouldn’t have been the same player had he signed for Real Madrid.

Messi is in a difficult position with regards to football back in his home country at the present moment following his mini-retirement which came after yet another final defeat in the Copa America.

However with that being said, Menotti looked to give credit to the way the forward has developed his game from being just a goal scorer.

“Messi wouldn’t have been the same player at Real Madrid, he debuted with Iniesta, Xavi and Ronaldinho, Cristiano Ronaldo never had that type of training, Messi’s evolution has been enormous from being a goalscoring forward to someone who directs play,” he explained to FOX Sports.

Diego Simeone’s reputation as a coach is continuously growing and it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that he will lead La Albiceleste one day and the 77-year-old made clear his admiration for him.

“I really like Simeone,” Menotti added, “he has done a very good job.”

With regards to newly appointed Argentina coach Edgardo Bauza’s comments on Messi needing to be protected, Menotti dismissed these sentiments as pointless.

“Messi is [almost] 30-years-old, he is capable of taking care of himself, these comments from Bauza about taking care of Messi are nothing but blowing smoke.”
