Asante Kotoko have qualified for the grand finale of the Ghalca G6 tournament as leaders of Group A after a 1-1 draw with league champions Ashantigold on Saturday at the Essipong Stadium in Sekondi-Takoradi.
A first half goal from Kwame Boateng on 20th minute gave a depleted Kotoko side the perfect start needed under assistant coach Michael Osei, who stood in for David Duncan, after the club sent their ‘first team to Libya’ for an international friendly with Al Ahli Tripoli.
Isaac Amoah saved Ashantigold’s blushes with a late equaliser but it wasn’t enough to send them into the final.
Aduana Stars topped Group B after a 3-0 drubbing of favorites Medeama. The Dormaa-based club shared the spoil in a goalless draw with Hearts of Oak in the opening game before Medeama pipped Hearts 1-0 to set up a crucial last group game.
With the home support becoming increasingly aggravated with the slow tempo and lack of creativity in Medeama’s attack, Aduana bench threw more men upfront in the second half and it yielded two goals after leading 1-0 before the break.
Aduana coach Nurudeen Amadu raised concerns about his player’s condition, insisting that they seem exhausted after playing two games within two days.
“My players have done very well in this tournament. Every day we have a game and it’s not easy,” Amadu said. “We are now thinking about how we are going to come up on Sunday[against Kotoko] in the final. The players are a little bit exhausted but I hope that we can play good football no matter what. The tournament has been a wonderful one for us amid everything and we hope to win the title in the end,” he added.
