The Spaniard has started both Premier League games for United so far this season with both yielding 1-0 victories for Louis van Gaal’s side.
United next face Club Brugge in the first leg of their upcoming Champions League clash on Tuesday and Mata says the competition is all that is being talked about at the club.
“The two words you can hear everywhere these days, both in Old Trafford and Carrington, our training complex, are Champions League,” Mata said in his blog, published in the Manchester Evening News.
“We are eager to play it again and, as you know, the play-off round is here.
“We don’t want to get too obsessed with that but it’s true that getting into the group stage is vital for everybody.
“Since the beginning of the pre-season we are getting ready for this moment.”
Mata is confident his side can play much better than they did at Villa Park on the weekend but is happy to simply have points on the board.
“During the 90 minutes we scored a nice goal and had spells of good football that we want to maintain this season,” he said.
“Basically, I think we are showing consistency as a team; we are not giving away many chances to our rivals, which is always positive.
“Obviously we know we have to get better, but the most important thing now is to get good results that help the team get started in this long season.”
