Herve Renard reveals why he comforted Andre Ayew

One of the most endearing images of the AFCON 2015 tournament in Equitorial Guinea was that of Ivory Coast Coach Herve Renard comforting an inconsolable Andre Ayew after Ghana lost to the Ivorians on penalties in the final.

A month after the pulsating final, and having already revealed what he told Ayew that night, Herve Renard has explained the reason behind his actions in a France Football column.

“I was afraid of being rejected by the Ghanaians. So when he was alone, I went”, said the former coach of Sochaux.

“It made me sad to see him like that. I have great affection for Jordan and Andre. I lived a year in Ghana, their little sister was educated with my daughter, we did not live far from each other.”

“I just wanted to comfort him, even if it did not make much use. I think he did not hear me when I said even Yaya and Kolo Toure, among the greats, lost two finals and ended up finally winning. I told him that I was sure that one day he would win with Ghana.”

Andre Ayew has done well to put the AFCON tournament behind him, producing some good performances [and goals] for his club side Marseille.
