Black Stars coach Avram Grant has called Asamoah Gyan one of the greatest players he has ever seen after his injury time goal gave Ghana an important win over favourites Algeria at the AFCON in Mongomo.
Unable to train since the team arrived in Equatorial Guinea,Gyan took to the field to lead Ghana over a fancied Algeria side.
“Asamoah Gyan was not fit coming into the game and he has not trained but he is Asamoah Gyan and his stats say it all. He is one of the greatest,no doubt about this. He always scores when you need him and secondly he is a very good captain and you can imagine what would have happened if he had played the first game. Even look at Manchester City who are struggling without Yaya Toure. We played well in our first game but the difference today was that we played with Asamoah Gyan. For him to give this effort for 96 minutes is great,” Grant told Allsports.com.gh.
Grant also dispelled the notion that his team had suddenly become favourites to win the title after their victory.
“Ghana is not a favourite. Even the fans at home and you the press have said we are not favourites and I have never said anywhere that we are favourites. This is because it is a new generation and also because of the age of the players. We just play to win every game. We are not interested in being favourites. Sometimes favourites don’t win matches,” he added.
Ghana’s next game is against South Africa in Mongomo on Tuesday.
