Former Ghana international Sarfo Gyamfi has insisted that Black Stars coach Avram Grant handed WAFA midfielder Samuel Tetteh a call up to appease Ghanaians after facing several criticisms for ‘neglecting the domestic league’.
Tetteh, 19, was named among the 23-man squad that defeated Comoros 2-0 on aggregate in the second round of the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers in November.
“I can tell you that Samuel Tetteh, who was invited by Avram Grant into the Black Stars squad, was to reduce criticism coming from Ghanaians after he neglected local football but not because of his performance” Gyamfi told Asempa FM.
“I can confidently say that he was only called to appease Ghanaians but not purely on merit. Local players cannot get a chance to be part of the Black Stars unless they move to abroad,” he added.
Tetteh was part of the Ghana U20 squad that participated in the 2015 Fifa World Youth Tournament, as well as the home-base Black Stars team that failed to qualify for the 2016 African Nations Championship tournament after losing to Cote d’Ivoire on away goal rule.
