Guardiola backs Laporta for Barca presidency

Former Barcelona head coach Pep Guardiola has put his support behind Joan Laporta ahead of the club’s July 18th presidential elections.

Laporta had a previous seven-year spell in the role, between 2003 and 2010, and oversaw the appointment of Guardiola as head coach in 2008.

Barcelona won an unprecedented treble in Guardiola’s first season in charge and the 44-year-old, who is now head coach at Bayern Munich, has not forgotten what Laporte did for him.

“All the aspiring candidates are good, but I can’t hide my personal ties and affection with Joan Laporta,” Guardiola told reporters.

“He was the man who gave me a chance as Barca coach.”

Laporte will be up against incumbent Josep Maria Bartomeu in the election, as well as Toni Freixa, a former club spokesman, Jordi Farre and Agusti Benedito.
