Newly-promoted side Techiman City were arguably the surprise package of matchday 1 as the 2015-16 Ghana Premier League got off to an exciting start, while there were also wins for Ashanti Gold, Dreams FC, All Stars, Bechem United and Hearts of Oak on Sunday.
The first match of the new season, however, was at the Sogakope Park on Saturday, when strikes from Charles Boateng and Samuel Tetteh handed WAFA a 2-0 victory over 23-time champions Asante Kotoko.
While the Porcupine Warriors got off to a faltering start, their nemesis Hearts of Oak had to wait for a 78th minute Samuel Yeboah strike to pick a slim 1-0 victory over New Edubiase at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The win should be a valuable motivation for Kenichi Yatsuhashi’s men who face an away trip to Medeama next weekend.
The 2015 Ghana FA Cup winners, on the other hand, are set to come into their clash with Hearts as wounded lions, having been stunned 2-1 by reigning league champions Ashanti Gold at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium on Sunday.
Brothers Alhassan Nuhu and Fuseini Nuhu scored for the home side, while Bernard Ofori fetched the solitary goal for the Yellow and Mauves.
At the Malik Jabir Stadium in Wa, a Maxwell Baako double and a Richard Arthur strike were enough as home side All Stars handed Hasaacas a 3-0 hammering ahead of the former’s trip to Aduana Stars next weekend. All Stars have taken an early lead at the top of the league table.
Perhaps, the most shocking result on Sunday came from the Nana Ameyaw Park where newly-promoted side Techiman City piped Berekum Chelsea 1-0. Issaka Ibrahim scored the lone goal for the side, which had their Premier League status confirmed only on Friday.
The score line wasn’t any different from that from Cape Coast Robert Mensah Stadium in the clash of the new boys. Johnson Owusu was the solitary goal hero as away side Dreams FC shocked Ebusua Dwarfs in their own backyard.
Bechem United got their season off to a winning start with a 2-0 home triumph over Liberty Professionals. Francis Afriyie and Yaw Andoh were the scorers on the day.
The 2-0 score line was repeated at the Tema Sports Stadium where Ropapa Mensah and Isaac Twum scored to give Inter Allies victory over 2010 champions Aduana Stars.
