Berekum Chelsea striker Asiwome Fumador has shed lights on the incident that occurred during their league opener against Techiman City on Sunday.
The 21-year-old collided with Techiman defender Iddrisu Mohammed after 15 minutes and had to be rushed to the hospital in a police jeep in the absence of an ambulance and medics at the stadium.
During his rescue, his teammate Sadick Adams played an important role by applying mouth-to-mouth resuscitation methods to save the life of Fumador.
“I really don’t know what happened and even couldn’t believe myself when I woke up on a hospital bed with oxygen on me and nurses all around,” Fumador told Goal.
“I think I died during that time. I can’t tell. I’ve been unable to recall anything before, during and after that incident.
“They told me I was unconscious for close to 15 minutes on the pitch after the collision and was rushed to the Holy Family hospital. I spent more than an hour under oxygen according to the nurses and was still motionless. That is what I call death,” he said.
Fumador urges the football association and the premier league board to make sure players’ health are protected during games with basic safety requirements at league centres.
“The absence of medical experts at the Ameyaw Park in Techiman nearly put my life in danger. It was very bad but I must be grateful to God and my teammates especially Sadick Adams, who, with the little education he had while playing for Atletico Madrid, was able to help me.
“I’ll entreat the Ghana Football Association and Premier League Board to make sure that an ambulance is always present at every league centre. At least one or two qualified doctors must also be employed at the various centres to preserve players’ life. Now, to be honest, I fear for my life playing football in Ghana,” he said.
The GFA and PLB have honoured Adams with a pair of boot and a ball for his intervention to save his teammate’s life.
Goal understands that Fumador will be out for at least three weeks to recuperate from both mental and psychological destabilisation.
