Ghana Football FULL TIME: Algeria 3 – 1South Africa By sports5050 - 19.01.15 FULL TIME – Algeria 3-1 South Africa: After a dour first half in which Furman’s shot that hit the bar was the best effort, the game sprung to life. Phala put Bafana Bafana ahead but Rantie failed to add to their tally when he hit the crossbar from a penalty spot. An own goal from Hlatshwayo levelled the game, before strikes from Ghoulam and Slimani, who hit the post earlier in the match, secured the win for the Desert Warriors. 90′ + 4′ There is the final whistle! Algeria get the win! 90′ + 3′ South Africa aren’t showing much desire to try and get a goal back in this game. They’re have been some positives for them for sure, but the quality of Algeria’s individuals has proved too much for them. 90′ + 1′ We are into the first of four additional minutes at the end of this half. 90′ SubstitutionYacine BrahimiE. Soudani 90′ Algeria’s final substitution sees Brahimi make way for Soudani. 88′ A deep cross from the right should be easy for M’Bolhi to deal with but rather than catch the ball he bats it behind for a corner. South Africa swing it in but they cannot test the keeper from the delivery. 87′ South Africa have not provided the same threat since Rantie’s missed penalties. Their substitutions have also struggled to get involved in the game and that has contributed to Algeria racing into the lead. 85′ SubstitutionSibusiso VilakaziMandla Masango 85′ Final change for South Africa, as Vilakazi goes off and Masango takes his place. 83′ Assist Ishak Belfodil 83′ Goal Slimani islam GOOOOOOOAAAL!! SLIMANI MAKES IT THREE! After such a good start, Keet’s game has crumbled. The striker fires a low shot straight at the keeper from the top of the box, but he lets it slip underneath him and into the back of the net! 81′ South Africa are struggling to hold onto possession at the moment, perhaps as they are showing signs of fatigue in these late stages. If Algeria can retain composure, they should get away from this with three points. 79′ SubstitutionTokelo Anthony RantieBongani Ndulula 79′ Well, that is the end of Rantie’s night, as he comes off to be replaced by Ndulula. 78′ Rantie is going to rue missing that penalty earlier in the game. He could have put his side 2-0 up and it might have led to a completely different outcome here. Algeria are allowing Bafana Bafana more possession but they’ve stopped looking to get in behind. 76′ After around a minute’s worth of appealing, Halliche is finally invited back onto the pitch to play out the remainder of the game. 74′ There’s a break in play now as Halliche takes a whack on the shins from Vilakazi as he dove in to block him from having a shot. The stretcher comes on for the centre-back, though it may be timewasting tactics from the Desert Warriors now they’re ahead. 72′ Assist Sofiane Feghouli 72′ Goal Faouzi Ghoulam GOOOOOOAAAL!! THE COMEBACK IS COMPLETE! Ghoulam finally pushes forward into space and he powers beyond Manyisa on his way into the box. He puts the ball onto his left foot and he rifles an effort beyond Keet at his near post! 70′ Mandi curls in a cross from the right and Keet comes to claim it. He reaches over about three yellow shirts and ends up spilling the ball. Before Slimani can pounce, Manyisa sends it out for a corner. 69′ RANTIE DENIED AGAIN! The striker gets another chance from around 12 yards out, and he stabs it goalwards. He fails to direct it towards either corner, though, and M’Bolhi saves with his legs. 67′ Own Goal Thulani Hlatshwayo GOOOOAAAL! ALGERIA ARE LEVEL! Brahimi is allowed time to get his head up and pick out his spot with a cross from the left. It is too high for Belfodil but Hlatshwayo does get his head to it, and the ball loops over the keeper and into the back of the net! 65′ Jali bends a cross in from the right which is picked up by Phala on the far side of the box. He takes a touch to put it onto his left foot and attempts a shot from the most acute of angles. Somewhat predictably, he only finds the side netting. 64′ SubstitutionLacenSaphir Taider 64′ A second change from Gourcuff as Saphir Taider enters the fray, with Lacen the man to make way. 63′ South Africa are really taking control of this game after a brief fightback from the Desert Warriors. Their pace is causing Algeria all sorts of problems. 61′ RANTIE! That is another great chance for the striker! Nhlapho did brilliantly to power his way into the box and square the ball for the Bournemouth man, but he failled to connect with the shot and simply scuffed it to M’Bolhi! 60′ SubstitutionRiyad MahrezIshak Belfodil 60′ Indeed, Gourcuff does make his first change, with Mahrez, who has been exceptionally poor, going off to be replaced by Ishak Belfodil. 58′ This is a good response from Algeria, who have seemed largely lifeless for much of this game. They are beginning to open up the play but Gourcuff may look to his bench soon. 56′ DOUBLE SAVE FROM KEET! Bentaleb opens up the play with a diagonal ball for Mandi, who rolls a pass to Slimani at the near post which he flicks goalwards with his trailing foot. The keeper saves it but Slimani gets to the rebound with his head. Keet is quickly back to his feet, though, and he parries the ball onto the post! 55′ Missed Penalty Tokelo Anthony Rantie RANTIE HITS THE BAR! The striker fails to convert from the spot, smashing the penatly straight down the middle only to see it crash off the bar on its way behind for a goal kick! 53′ Yellow Card Aissa Mandi 53′ PENALTY TO SOUTH AFRICA! Wow! What an explosive start to the second half. Phala is again involved, picking up the ball on the right and cutting inside of Halliche. He rolls a pass into the path of Vilakazi, who is scythed down by Mandi inside the box! A yellow card for the right-back, and a penalty to Bafana Bafana! 51′ Assist Sibusiso Vilakazi 51′ Goal Thuso Phala GOOOOOAAAAAL!! SOUTH AFRICA LEAD! Vilakazi breaks down the left and turns to face the box. He rolls a pass to the byline for Rantie before continuing his run, and the striker flicks a pass back to him. He then squares for Phala who takes a touch before sending a shot past the idle M’Bolhi! 50′ JUST WIDE! Phala bends a corner in from the right and Vilakazi runs to the near post to meet it. He gets plenty of power behind his header but he sends it just outside of the upright! 48′ Algeria are trying to pick up the pace in the early stages of this half but South Africa are congesting the centre of the park and making it difficult for Brhaimi to get involved. 46′ We’re back underway! The teams are back out, so the second half will begin momentarily. HALF TIME – Algeria 0-0 South Africa: Gourcuff’s men started brightly but they soon lost their way and it was the Bafana Bafana who had the better of the chances. Only the heroics of M’Bolhi have kept them level, as he tipped a shot onto the bar and also made saves from Vilakazi and Jali. It’s all still to play for in the second half! 45′ + 2′ There is the half-time whistle! 45′ We are into stoppage time at the end of the first half, now. 43′ M’BOLHI TO THE RESCUE AGAIN! Jali makes a late run into the box and Manyisa slides a pinpoint pass into his feet. He has enough room to shift the ball onto his right foot but Medjani slides in to close the angle. The Bafana Bafana midfielder still gets his shot away, but M’Bolhi has his near post covered and deflects it away with his knees! 42′ GREAT GOALKEEPING! Matlaba comes inside from the right and feeds Vilakazi 12 yards out from goal. The forward holds of Halliche before spinning to his left to open up space for a shot. M’Bolhi races off his line, though, and gets a hand on the ball to deny him! 41′ South Africa break down the left but there aren’t many bodies getting forward so Manyisa holds up the play. He spots Vilakazi making a diagonal run to the near side of the area so he scoops a pass in his direction. It is too powerful, though, and M’Bolhi gathers. 39′ OVER THE TOP! A cross from the right meets the head of Slimani but he sends the ball straight back where it came from. Furman lets it run, though, and Mandi comes onto it with a volley that flies high of the crossbar. The South Africa captain holds his hands up in apology to his team-mates. 38′ Rantie shows great feet on the right corner of the box to take the ball away from his marker and dart towards the byline. He has Ghoulam in pursuit and he seems to lose concentration as he runs it behind for a goal kick. 36′ There is not enough urgency from Algeria at the moment, with their overplaying of the ball enabling South Africa to get back into position and restrict the spaces. 34′ Yet again it is a really poor delivery from Mahrez, which drops beyond the far post and straight out for a goal kick. They cannot afford to keep wasting these opportunities in what has been a rather bitty game up to now. 33′ Yellow Card Thabo Matlaba 32′ Nhlapho has moved out to the right-back position and Ngcongca has moved into a central role in the back four. Feghouli looks to race into the box from the right wing but loses his footing as he comes together with Matlaba. It is enough to earn the left-back a yellow card, though! 31′ Algeria aren’t showing the same cohesion or fluidity that they did inside the opening few minutes. They attempt to release Brahimi down the left but he is unable to stop the ball form going out of play for a goal kick to South Africa. 30′ SubstitutionRivaldo CoetzeeSiyabonga Nhlapho 29′ Before the substitution can be made the corner is taken, but Ngcongca’s header does not find the target. The ball eventually goes out for a throw and Nhlapho enters the game for the injured Coetzee. 27′ There’s a break in play before the corner is taken, though, as Coetzee is down inside the centre circle seemingly with injury. The referee has called for a stretcher, so that may be the end of his game! 26′ A long pass down the right is not dealt with by Halliche, but Rantie allows the ball to run out for a corner as he has no one up in support inside the box. 25′ Jali loses the ball to Feghouli and in his attempts to win it back he fouls the Valencia man. Mahrez takes the responsibility of delivering the subsequent free kick but he curls it straight into the arms of Keet. 23′ OFF THE BAR! Furman picks up the ball 25 yards out and takes a touch before sending a dipping, swerving drive at goal. M’Bolhi leaps up and gets a hand to it, tipping the effort onto the crossbar! That is a brilliant save from the Algerian keeper. 22′ Another pass over the top creates a chance for South Africa! This time it is Jali with the long ball from the halfway line, and it is Rantie he releases behind the defence. The striker decides to shoot with his first touch but he fires his effort wide of the near post! 20′ GREAT STRIKE! Brahimi lets fly with a sizzling effort from 20 yards that arrows towards the near post. Keet shifts across his line to get his body behind the ball and he takes it into his chest without a spill. 19′ There’s not a consistent tempo to the game at the moment, with plenty of congestion in the centre of the park making it difficult for either team to carve out an opening. Brahimi is doing his best to find pockets of space and get his team on the front foot, though. 17′ CHANCE! A long ball over the top from Ngcongca is chased down by Rantie, and M’Bolhi rushes off his line to meet him. The striker knocks the ball past the Algerian keeper but his touch goes out of play and the chance is lost. Medjani couldn’t cope with his pace! 15′ Algeria again look to eke out an opening for a cross on the right but Bafana Bafana are working hard to quickly press their opponents and force them into releasing the ball quickly. They try to switch it over to the left but Ngcongca heads it away. 13′ An interesting decision, that one! South Africa win a corner and when it is put in the box Slimani gets a high foot up to try and clear it. He is clattered into by Hlatshwayo, who he nearly caught with his boot, but the free kick goes the way of Gourcuff’s side. 12′ Furman cedes a free kick for a sloppy push on Mahrez on the left, and Brahimi delivers it into the box. Slimani attacks the ball but Keet comes off his line and plucks it out of the sky, without needing two attempts this time! 10′ South Africa win a throw on the left and Matlaba takes it. The ball is sent back to him so he loops a cross into the box. There is no one challenging M’Bolhi, and he claims it unopposed and restarts the play for Algeria. 9′ Mashaba’s men are beginning to have a bit more joy now, with an increased amount of possession. They’re struggling to create anything of note for the time being. 7′ South Africa concede a free kick in a central position, farther than 30 yards from goal. Ghoulam decides he’ll have a pop, striking the set-piece cleanly and sending it swerving through the air. Keet doesn’t have to move, though, and after patting it down he smothers it. 5′ The Desert Warriors are in control so far, but Bentaleb overruns the ball out on the left and lunges into a challenge on Ngcongca which the South African rides. Still, the referee shows that he won’t stand for tackles like that by awarding Bafana Bafana a free kick. 3′ Algeria are moving the ball around nicely in these early stages, and they shift it out to Feghouli on the right. He twists and turns to try and get away from Matlaba and get a cross in, but the defender blocks it to send it out for a corner. The subsequent delivery is cleared easily. 1′ We are underway! The pre-match formalities have almost been conducted, so we should be underway in just a few short moments. Senegal defeated Ghana 2-1 in the other Group C game earlier today, so a defeat for either of these sides would put them three points adrift of a qualifying spot already! The teams are heading out onto the pitch now, and now we await the national anthems. South Africa substitutes: Khuzwayo, Mabokgwane, Nhlapho, Gcaba, Masango, Zungu, Sangweni, Zwane, Ndulula, Parker. Algeria: M’Bolhi, Mandi, Medjani, Halliche, Ghoulam, Lacen, Bentaleb, Mahrez, Brahimi, Feghouli, Slimani. SOUTH AFRICA TEAM NEWS: Bafana Bafana will be hoping captain Dean Furman can help protect the defence against Algeria’s attacking talent, while Tokelo Rantie, of Championship side Bournemouth, will be relied upon for goals this evening. ALGERIA TEAM NEWS: Gourcuff sets his team out with plenty attacking talent on display. Sofiane Feghouli, Riyad Mahrez and Yacine Brahimi will operate in behind Sporting striker Islam Slimani. If all four are at their best then the Desert Warriors will be formidable opponents. Shakes Mashaba is unbeaten since taking the helm of the Bafana Bafana back in July last year, winning five and drawing four of his nine games in charge. Algeria have also had a solid start under their new coach Christian Gourcuff, who replaced Vahid Halihodzic after the Bosnian guided the Desert Warriors to the second round of the World Cup in Brazil. It’s going to be a very intriguing game in Mongomo.
