Ashanti Gold have won the 2014/2015 Ghana Premier League title in the penultimate round of matches on Sunday.
The Miners achieved this feat by defeating WAFA 1-0 at the Len Clay Stadium through a 72nd minute penalty converted by Emmanuel Osei.
Bashir Hayford’s boys now have a healthy six-point gap ahead of Aduana Stars going into the final matches. Hayford has now sealed his second league title after first winning it with Kotoko in 2008.
Asante Kotoko were resolute in Sekondi after snatching a hard-fought 1-0 win against Sekondi Hasaacas.
The Porcupine Warriors had what looked like a good goal disallowed in the first half before Eric Donkor missed a penalty in the dying embers of the game.
Donkor later redeemed himself by getting the winning goal in injury time to move Kotoko out of the bottom three.
Kotoko dropped from the top four to the 15th position after a ruling by the Ghana FA saw them losing six points last Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Accra Hearts of Oak beat Berekum Chelsea 3-2 in their final home match of the season. Chelsea’s Kofi Owusu grabbed a brace to take his tally to 17, just one behind leading scorer Nathaniel Asamoah.
Owusu can pick the accolade if he makes use of the final game since Asamoah has left Medeama for Raja Casablanca in Morocco.
Liberty Professionals defeated already-relegated BA United 2-1 to maintain their premier league status. Irrespective of the outcome of their final match, the Dansoman Lads will still remain unscathed.
Wa All Stars’ 2-0 win over Medeama was a season saver, but the Yellow and Mauves, the reigning Ghana FA champions, must win their final match in order to stay in the top-flight.
Heart of Lions posted a 2-0 win over fellow strugglers Great Olympics, while Edubiase’s 0-0 away draw with Aduana Stars puts them in a tight corner.
Bechem United are still stuck in the bottom three after managing a 0-0 draw with Inter Allies in Tema.
Apart from BA United who have been relegated, Bechem United, Great Olympics, Heart of Lions, Edubaise FC, Medeama SC, Sekondi Hasaacas, WAFA and Asante Kotoko are all in danger. Two of them will join BA United on the relegation list next weekend.
