There was a lot of attention on the relegation battle during the mid-week action, although the title race is also getting extra interesting.
At the summit of the table, Aduana Stars have fought their way back into strong contention for their second premier league title. The Ogyaa Boys are now just a point away from the league leaders AshantiGold after posting an impressive 2-0 win over Sekondi Hasaacas. Goals from Daniel Darkwah and Eric Asiedu were enough to confirm how imperious the 2009/2010 champions have been at home.
Meanwhile, AshantiGold were held 0-0 by Bechem United as their two-point lead was narrowed to one ahead of the last four matches. The Miners must brace up for tough battles against Medeama Sc, Berekum Chelsea, WAFA and Accra Great Olympics. Judging from Aduana’s resilience, AshGold must secure at least ten out of the available twelve points to realise their dream of ending the two-decade premier league trophy drought.
Kumasi Asante Kotoko’s resurgence continued unabated as they walloped Wa All Stars 3-1 at the Baba Yara Stadium to move close to the top-four bracket. Dauda Mohammed, Ahmed Toure and Obed Owusu were on the score sheet for the Porcupine Warriors.
Edubaise FC fought hard to settle for a point against Inter-Allies at the Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi. Alhassan Nuhu struck late in the second half to ensure the homeside picked a point to help them in their relegation fight.
Nathaniel Asamoah’s impeccable goal scoring form is being accentuated in the latter stages of the league. The former Kotoko striker hit his 18th goal of the season as Medeama beat WAFA 2-1 in Tarkwa. Asamoah’s top scorer accolade is now very much on course as he sits five clear goals ahead of Berekum Chelsea’s Kofi Owusu.
Heart of Lions were the biggest winners on Wednesday after defeating BA United 5-0. Yusif Abubakar’s men are sitting just outside the relegation pit, while BA United have already confirmed their exit from the top-flight.
Relegation-threatened Great Olympics produced one of their best performances of the season after recovering from a goal down to post a 4-2 win over Berekum Chelsea.
Foovi Aguidi was on hand again to score for Hearts of Oak who made a short trip to city rivals Liberty Professionals and left with a 1-0 victory.
Even though Hearts and Olympics are in the relegation zone; the likes of Liberty Professionals, Bechem United, Edubaise FC and Heart of Lions are all not safe. This year’s final stretch presents fans with one of the most unpredictable relegation battles as the GPL enters the final four rounds.
