AFCON hosts Equitorial Guinea have qualified for the knockout stages of the tournament after a hard fought 2-0 victory over Gabon in their Group A fixture on Sunday evening.
The two sides struggled to create a lot of chances in the first half, having the look of two teams who didn’t want to risk losing the match and being eliminated altogether.
Equitorial Guinea -the lowest ranked team in the tournament- needed a win to stand any chance of progressing and did just that courtesy Javier Balboa who converted a second half penalty.
The forward was brought down as he received a pass in the box, and he proceeded to take responsibility for the spot kick, striking it beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.
The goal gave the hosts a new lease of life as they bombed forward at will, looking to add to their tally, and eventually did so courtesy Salvador who slotted home a rebound effort.
The stadium erupted with joy as the ball rolled into the net, on one of the nights of the tournament so far.
Gabon will be joined by Congo in the quarter-final, who defeated Burkina Faso by two goals to one.
