Elaine Thompson upset two-time defending Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown at the Jamaica National Track and Field Championships.
Campbell-Brown – gold medallist in the 200 metres at the past two Olympic Games – could only finish third in Kingston on Sunday, as Thompson triumphed with a time of 22.51 seconds.
The 22-year-old sprinter won the 200m final ahead of another former Olympian – Sherone Simpson (22.77secs) – and Campbell-Brown (23.02secs).
It was the second third-placed finish for Campbell-Brown at the national titles, after the 33-year-old crossed the line behind Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Natasha Morrison in the 100m final on Saturday.
In the men’s 200m final, Nickel Ashmeade triumphed in 20.36secs, edging out London 2012 bronze medallist Warren Weir (20.39secs), while Julian Forte (20.51secs) claimed third.
Ashmeade had claimed second in the men’s 100m final earlier in the championships behind Asafa Powell, with Usain Bolt absent from the trials and Yohan Blake failing to reach the decider.
