Afcon 2017: Egypt undecided on starting XI for Mali – Hector Cuper

Egypt coach Hector Cuper has revealed that he and his technical team are still undecided over their starting XI for their opening 2017 Africa Cup of Nations match against Mali.

The Pharaohs will tackle the Eagles in just over a week (January 17) for their first Group D clash in Port-Gentil, Gabon. It will be followed by games against Uganda and Ghana on January 21 and 25 respectively.

Egypt recorded a 1-0 win over fellow North Africans and AFCON participants Tunisia this past weekend in their final warm-up game before the tournament.

The seven-time AFCON champions will now look to do final tune-ups before their opening match, but Cuper has admitted that they are not even certain who the first-choice goalkeeper is.

Amr Warda has probably secured a starting place thanks to his fine performance in midfield against Tunisia, while Marwan Mohsen may have done the same due to his decisive goal.

“I am very happy with his performance tonight, he played very well and so did many players who showed determination to prove themselves,” the Argentine said in regards to Warda.

Cuper added, “The coaching staff has not decided who will be the starting goalkeeper in the tournament yet; neither did we decide the rest of the starting XI against Mali.”
