Real Madrid suffered a double injury blow in Sunday’s clash with Sporting Gijon, with winger Gareth Bale and forward Karim Benzema both withdrawn after suffering knocks.
Bale opened the scoring for Zinedine Zidane’s side against the Liga strugglers although had to be replaced at half-time, with the Welshman to have medical tests on Tuesday to assess the extent of the damage.
Madrid raced into a five-goal half-time lead against Sporting as Cristiano Ronaldo and Benzema joined Bale on the scoresheet, with Los Blancos now well on the way to claiming their second win under new manager Zidane.
But the injury to Bale, who was taken off for Jese Rodriguez at the interval, will come as a blow to Madrid and it is not the first time the Welshman has struggled with calf issues.
The former Tottenham star initially suffered a calf injury back in September and aggravated the problem six weeks later as he limped out of a Liga fixture with Levante on October 17.
And the injury situation got worse for Zidane as France international Benzema had to be take off after 64 minutes, with the forward inadvertently kicked by James Rodriguez as both players attempted a shot at goal.
