Di Matteo resigns as Schalke coach

Former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo has left his role at Schalke after just seven months in charge of the Bundesliga side.

Di Matteo took over in October with the team sitting in 11th place in the table and galvanised the side, almost knocking Real Madrid out of the Champions League with a 4-3 win at the Bernabeu.

But the club announced on Tuesday that Di Matteo has stepped down as head coach after a disappointing end to the season, with Schalke only qualifying for the Europa League following a sixth placed finish.
