Depay edges close to Manchester United

Memphis Depay has passed a medical ahead of completing his move to Manchester United, the club have confirmed.

The PSV star arrived at the club’s Carrington training base on Monday to undergo a medical after United agreed a fee with the Dutch club earlier in May.

Depay will now stay in Manchester overnight ahead of his move being completed in June.

In a short statement, United said: “Memphis Depay has today completed his medical at Manchester United.

“The club will now work towards finalising his registration when the international transfer window opens in June.”

United confirmed they had reached an agreement with PSV to sign the Netherlands international on May 7, with Louis van Gaal’s side having seen off interest from Premier League rivals Liverpool and Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Depay’s agents arrived in Manchester on Sunday evening, before the player went through the medical process at Carrington training base.

Goal understands the 21-year-old will sign a five-year contract with Van Gaal’s side, on wages that will be in excess of six figures a week, while the transfer fee could rise to as much as £31 million depending on individual and team success.

Depay played his final game for PSV in the 3-2 win over ADO Den Haag, where he was confirmed as the Eredivisie Golden Boot winner having already secured the title with the Eindhoven club.

With Depay on the verge of completing his switch to Old Trafford, Van Gaal will step up his pursuit of other summer targets, with the likes of Mats Hummels and Gareth Bale set to be high on the agenda.

As reported by Goal, United have the financial muscle to surpass their unprecedented £150m spending from last season, where a new goalkeeper could be a requirement as David de Gea’s future with the club hangs in the balance.

Van Gaal admitted on Sunday that he “cannot persuade” the Spaniard to remain at Old Trafford, insisting that the former Atletico Madrid keeper has a difficult decision to make with Real Madrid interested in taking the 24-year-old back to Spain.

The United boss said: “I don’t know [if Madrid have made an offer]. I don’t think I can persuade him [to stay]. He knows everything that he has at the moment at Manchester United.

“I don’t have to say something in benefit of Manchester United because he can feel it every day. Unbelievable that reaction [from the United fans after he was substituted against Arsenal]. When he is going, he is losing that. Here he has a lot of credit. He has to decide.”
