David De Gea named in United’s Champions League squad

United manager Louis Van Gaal chose not to pick De Gea for the 1-0 Premier League victory over Tottenham due to concerns about the Spaniard’s state of mind after speculation that he would join Real Madrid.

But the 24-year-old could feature in the Champions League qualification play-off matches against Club Brugge, with the first leg next week, and possibly in the Premier League game against Aston Villa on Friday.

Van Gaal has told Real that they will have to pay a world record fee for a goalkeeper if they want to sign De Gea. However, United risk losing their No 1 on a free transfer next summer.

Fellow keeper Victor Valdes has not been selected in the Champions League squad an indication that the 33-year-old will leave.

Valdes did not travel to the US on United’s pre-season tour and Van Gaal said he would be sold for refusing to play in the reserves.
