Carla Suarez Navarro wins Qatar Open

Carla Suarez Navarro fought back from a set down to beat teenager Jelena Ostapenko in a gripping Qatar Open final on Saturday.

Suarez Navarro looked in danger of missing out on a second WTA title when she was swept aside in the first set, but recovered to win 1-6 6-4 6-4 in Doha.

It was a disappointing end to a memorable week for unseeded 18-year-old Ostapenko, who claimed the scalps of Svetlana Kuznetsova and Petra Kvitova but was runner-up in a final for the second time in her short career.

World number 11 Suarez Navarro, on the other hand, was able to celebrate her biggest victory and celebrated in style by jumping into her players’ box.

Ostapenko, ranked 88 in the world, showed no signs of nerves as she surged into a 4-0 lead and there was no way back in the opening set for a stunned Suarez Navarro.

The Spaniard regained her composure at the start of the second, however, and claimed the solitary break to lead 4-3 before going on to level the match.

Ostapenko, who beat Suarez Navarro in the only previous encounter between the pair at Wimbledon last year, put that setback behind her to go a break up at 2-0 in the decider.

But Suarez Navarro responded by winning four games in a row to take the upper hand and needed just two match points to clinch the trophy.
