Cagla Buyukakcay wins in Istanbul Cup

Cagla Buyukakcay is motivated by the pressure of delivering a home winner at the Istanbul Cup after reaching the quarter-finals on Thursday.

A 6-4 6-2 win over Sorana Cirstea moved Buyukakcay into the last eight – where Nao Hibino awaits following her three-set win over┬áReka-Luca Jani.

Buyukakcay had not won in eight attempts at her home event prior to this year, but can now feel momentum building as she looks to become the competition’s first native winner.

“Yes, it’s my best result in my country. I am very excited,” Buyukakcay said.

“I think that at the beginning it’s tough, your people want you to play well, you feel the pressure.

“I handled it well in my first match here, and today I was focused on what I had to do well and not on the result.”

Seeded trio Kirsten Flipkens (4), Kateryna Bondarenko (7) and Johanna Larsson (8) were sent packing in other matches, going down to Kateryna Kozlova, Kristina Kucova and Anastasija Sevastova respectively.

Kozlova and Sevastova will meet in the quarter-finals, while Kucova faces Stefanie Voegele, who beat Andreea Mitu in straight sets.
