Some Ghanaians have raised concerns regarding the 26-man provisional squad announced by Black Stars coach Avram Grant for the 2017 African Cup of Nations, but GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi has jumped to his defence, saying that the current squad is the best the coach can present and that players are chosen based on merit.

The squad were announced during a press conference at the GFA’s secretariat on Monday morning, before the players departed for a 12-day camping at the United Arab Emirates in preparation for the continental showpiece next week in Gabon.

“Black Stars are not district assembly where things done based on electoral areas. Players chosen on merit,” Nyantakyi said at the press conference.

“Every Ghanaian is eligible to play in the team whether based in GH or abroad. Avram chose those he feels are best placed.”

During their tour at the UAE, two friendlies have been scheduled as part of their build up to the Afcon 2017.

The continental showpiece will take place from 14 January to 5 February in Gabon.
