Ayew captains Ghana against Senegal

Coach Avram Grant has named his starting line-up for the opening group stage match against Senegal without captain Asamoah Gyan

Andre Ayew will be captain Ghana in their Africa Cup of Nations opener against Senegal on Monday.

Usual captain Asamoah Gyan has been ruled out due to “mild bout of malaria” and will be replaced up front by Lorient forward Jordan Ayew, while his armband goes to the other Ayew brother.

Razak Brimah will man the post for the four-time African champions and will be shielded by Jonathan Mensah, Awal Mohammed and Daniel Amartey.

Esperance guardsman Harrison Afful and Augsburg rising star Abdul Baba Rahman will man the flanks as new coach Avram Grant seeks to open his first major outing with a victory.

Rabiu Mohammed and Emmanuel Agyemang will be in front of the defence and expected to feed the Ayews and Christian Atsu.

Ghana starting XI:

Razak Brimah, Harrison Afful, Baba Rahman, Awal Mohammed, Jonathan Mensah, Daniel Amartey, Rabiu Mohammed, Agyemang Badu, Christian Atsu, Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew
