Loyalties have been questioned by Atletico Madrid fans on social media, after former star Paulo Futre celebrated Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal’s European triumph.
The Portuguese 50-year-old was somewhat understandably delighted when his nation finally lifted their first major trophy on Sunday night, but his joy and praise of Cristiano Ronaldo has attracted ire from Los Colchoneros supporters, many of whom were supporting France due to Antoine Griezmann’s involvement.
After reading some outraged responses, Futre has defended himself by publishing the following message:
“Dear Colchoneros, I have read many aggressive comments these past few days,” he began. “But I know that you understand that I’m proud to be Portuguese and to be the captain of my side.
“I didn’t see even a single Rojiblanco angry that Spain and Real Madrid’s captain, Iker Casillas, stopped Arjen Robben’s shot in 2010. Nor did I see any who would have preferred Holland to win because Heitinga played for them. Cristiano is the King of Portugal. THE KING OF EUROPE”.
