The Dessert warriors of Algeria were yesterday crashed out of the AFCON tournament ongoing in Gabon after being held to a 2-2 draw by Senegal. Islam Slimani scored both goals but Senegal twice equalised through Moussa Sow and Papakouly Diop.
Senegal were already assured of topping Group B after making 10 changes to their side from their previous game ,yet they still had enough to hold the Algerian’s to a draw. Algeria had to win and hope for a draw from the other game where Zimbabwe played Tunisia, but there was actually no such miracle.
Riyad Mahrez was denied by the goalkeeper as he threatened to increase the tally after Slimani had given them the lead. But Aissa Mandi headed the ball out as far, as midfielder Diop volleyed home on the 44th minute to put Senegal back on level.
The dessert warriors seized the lead the second time just 8 minutes into the second half through Slimani again, after a lifted pass from Mahrez which Slimani controlled soo well to slice the ball past goalkeeper Cheikh Ndoye.
It looked as if the Algerians were done but Senegal’s Moussa Sow then turned things out for his lions when he equalised on the 53th minute to put Senegal back on level for the second time. Algeria couldn’t do much again as the game them ended on level which leaves them out of the tournament after being tipped initially as favourites. Now Senegal will play Cameroon on Saturday in the quarter final.
